If you want to open a National Pension System (NPS) account for retirement planning, you are required to submit the NPS Subscriber Registration Form (CSRF 1). This form is mandatory for all NPS account openings across all subscriber categories: government employees, corporate sector workers, self-employed professionals, and individual investors.
The form collects your personal details, investment choices, and nomination information, then routes your application through your bank or Point of Presence (PoP) to generate your unique PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number).
What is the NPS Subscriber Registration Form
The NPS Subscriber Registration Form (officially called CSRF 1, Version 2) is the official entry document for opening a pension account under the National Pension System. It replaces the older Form CSRF (Version 1). Unlike mutual fund applications, this form also includes mandatory pension fund selection and investment strategy decisions that directly impact your retirement corpus 25-30 years from now.

Golden Rules for Filling the Form Correctly
Rule 1: Ink and Writing Style
You must fill the form in English and BLOCK letters using only a black ink pen. Many applicants use fountain pens (which can bleed) or blue ink (which banks reject). Keep a black ball-point pen handy. Do not use pencil, red ink, or cursive writing. Banks will reject the form if written in lowercase or cursive.
Rule 2: No Overwriting Allowed
If you make a mistake, do NOT cross it out and write over it. Instead, cancel the entire entry (by drawing a single line through it) and re-write clearly. Any correction must be countersigned (initialed and dated) by you in the margin.
Rule 3: Photograph Affixing Protocol
Affix a recent color photograph (3.5 cm x 2.5 cm). Do not staple or clip it (use glue instead). Do not sign across the photograph. If your face is covered by any marking or signature, the form is rejected immediately.
Rule 4: Thumb Impressions (If Not Signing)
If you prefer a thumb impression over a signature, remember: Left Thumb Impression (LTI) for males, Right Thumb Impression (RTI) for females. Using the wrong thumb is a common error that flags your form for manual review, adding 5-7 days to processing.
Most Common Mistakes Leading to Rejection
Mistake 1: Filling Asset Allocation for Auto Choice
You selected Auto Choice (age-based automatic allocation) but filled the Asset Allocation table below it with percentages for Classes E, C, and G. The form explicitly states that this section should be left blank for Auto Choice. Your application is rejected and you must resubmit.
Mistake 2: Nomination Percentages Not Totaling 100%
You nominated three people with shares 40%, 30%, and 20%. The total is only 90%. The form is rejected because the system requires exactly 100%.
Mistake 3: Using Decimals in Nomination Shares
You wrote 50.5%, 30.2%, 19.3% in the nomination shares. The form only accepts whole numbers (integers). Rejected. Change to 50%, 30%, 20%.
Mistake 4: Leaving Pension Fund Blank
You did not select a pension fund, assuming the system will assign a default. The form will be rejected. You must choose one of 7 funds or accept that SBI Pension Funds will be your default (but this must still be explicitly ticked).
Mistake 5: Date Format Mismatch
Your Aadhaar shows date of birth as “15/05/1992” but you write “May 15, 1992” or “15-05-1992” on the form. Exact format match is required. Use dd/mm/yyyy only.
Mistake 6: Name Spelling Mismatch
Your Aadhaar shows “Rajesh Kumar Singh” but you write “Rajesh K Singh” on the form. Any spelling difference causes rejection. Write exactly as it appears on your identity document.
Mistake 7: Overwriting Without Countersignature
You made a mistake, crossed it out, and re-wrote. But you did not initial and date the correction. The form is rejected because banks cannot verify the authenticity of the correction.
Mistake 8: Signing Across the Photograph
Your signature overlaps the photograph, obscuring your face. Immediate rejection. Your face must be 100% visible. The signature box is at the bottom of the form, not on the photograph.
